Winter weather the last few weeks till today. It’s simply beautiful. Restful. From flurries to winter storms, to sunny snow days with patches of snow falling, to snow melting into a beauty of fog and rain. I feel and see a hint of spring will be coming soon. 🌺 🌼 🌧️ “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:” Completion. That picture of something I had drew up in my mind now reality. The center of our home, our meeting place, our refueling space, the place to gather and connect became all we had wanted at the work of our own hands. It is possible to have a designer home. A space created with character and stories. A well-loved, and well-lived in space that contains all the beauty you can dream up. Collect your inspiration, spend time dreaming and planning it. Live in it to know it well. Understand its needs and functions in your home. And then—you just have to do it. For more details on this particular space and the stories behind it check out the blog. That endearing little idea that dared us to do it (open the wall up) did indeed turn out as dear as we imagined it to be. Our sweet kiddos filled it with joy and the additional seating it offered when entertaining was a plus. Being able to honor separate rooms in this historical home while allowing some sight between the kitchen and dining room saved this busy momma. We spent a lot of time thinking on creating it well, while maximizing function. For the counter we used an old bowling ball flooring we found on marketplace. Paired with four resin wicker bar stools I’d been dreaming of for each one of our four kiddos. Sure is adorable. While this won’t always be the answer for every space that touches, in our particular set up it was. These photos show the accomplishing design of the two rooms existing together. Two different colors working in balance. Harmony? Yes. Cohesiveness? Yes. It’s something quite lovely. Bright and cheery against the dark nantucket dining room. The two work together quite nicely. A view I came to love. That beautiful wallpaper showing from the kitchen, picking up the hues from the dining room and pulling everything together. The rooms complimenting each other as if they were meant to be. A satisfying duo. Live in your spaces and study them for quite some time before deciding how to pair them. Every home will be different, but have the courage to do what you feel is right for your home. Pick hues that will in the end, compliment the other. My heart leapt with joy finding this painting when antiquing for a price I could afford. I admire everything about it. For me this painting and the other small nautical nods in the space, keep Jesus’s many stories on the water and on the sea, present in my heart and I love that. If I’ve learned anything in my walk with Christ, it’s that we too are as forgetful as those Israelites. These little reminders of Him keep His miracles present in my life and mind on a daily. Sort of a memorial to be remembered. To admire and aspire towards. Picking pieces that speak to you are only going to add to your enjoyment, while also uplifting and encouraging you. Equipping you for living your life the best you can and making it a space you want to come back to. For more details on this particular space and the stories behind it check out the blog. Do some research and decide what inspiration you like best. For our nantucket inspired dining room and the dark color chosen on the walls, I landed on black for the interior outlet, paired with a brass plate cover. A simple statement that stands out and looks timeless. For all the details on this space and the stories behind it, check out the blog. For this particular space, our dining room table was handmade from my father, a skilled carpenter, who passed in 2019. He made it for us out of an old heavy duty work bench that was Tom’s father’s. An extra special build. A piece we will treasure for a lifetime. The cherry on top of it all, something from both of our dad’s. A build filled with memories of times past and ready for many more to come for generations. There are so many meaningful items throughout this room, but not going to forget to mention that beautiful picture of Jesus that I hold dearly that also belonged to my father. He adored it and I do too. I layered it up with a surrounding gold frame to emphasize it more. If you are unable to add meaningful pieces, hunt for things that remind you of meaningful moments. Things that spark joy, nostalgia or warmth for your home. For me, it makes a space feel even more cherished. Homey. For further details on this space and the stories behind it, check out the blog. If you don’t love it, don’t settle. Do the work to find what you love. I searched fervently to find a garbage can I could love in my home. I was tired of the usual cans available and wanted something especially pleasing aesthetically, yes—even for my garbage can. When I finally came upon this beauty, the wicker trash can of my dreams. While it cost me a bit initially, I knew it was an investment into something long lasting. Designer approved and an upgrade I don’t regret. Over time I’ve purchased several more for other rooms in my home and it makes me happy every time. For further details on this space and the stories behind it, check out the blog. Nothing makes a space feel more motivating like a fresh vase of flowers or life giving plants. They create a cozy environment, create happy thoughts, and purify the air while they are at it. Especially as a homemaker, they present a goal to keep the house cleaner and food divine at meals….just so those beautiful florals can shine. Let me also add dried flowers or foliage amongst those, or styled in hutches can fill the need as well. I love dried flowers all year round. Capturing yet another season of a flowers life and beauty. All in all, they create peace, texture, and bring some of God’s admirable creations inside our homes. Enjoy a snapshot of how I used them in our nantucket inspired dining room.
